cream sofa styled with red and green pillows against a lit paneled wall

A cream sofa is the easiest piece in a living room to dress for the holidays, because it takes any colour and gives it back. Here the red and green live only in the soft things — pillows, a throw, flowers on the table. The paneled wall behind does the rest, with a warm strip of light along its edge. Here is the room piece by piece — six that earned a place, and one that did not.

The room as it stands: curved cream sofa, red and green pillows, a red fringed throw, a lit paneled wall, and a round wood coffee table with red flowers.

why this room works

The light comes from behind. A warm strip along the paneling lights the wall, not the room. The sofa sits in front of a glow instead of under a ceiling light, and the whole corner feels like evening.

Holiday colour stays in the soft things. Sofa, wall, rug and table are all neutral. The red and green are only in pillows, a throw and flowers, so the room goes back to plain in ten minutes in January.

Red shows up at three heights. Pillows on the sofa back, the throw down the arm, flowers on the table. One red thing looks like an accident. Three looks like a plan.

The order matters when putting it together. Paneling and light first, while the wall is bare. Sofa second, centred on the panels. Pillows, throw and flowers last.

curved cream sofa, low back

Rounded arms, low back, soft cream fabric. The low back leaves most of the paneled wall in view, and the curves soften all the straight lines of the molding behind it.

Cream fabric under a red throw. Worth checking the throw does not bleed dye if it gets damp.

warm white LED strip light

A thin strip set along the paneling behind the sofa. Warm white, not cool, so the glow looks like candlelight on the wall. It is the piece that finishes the room.

Placed so the strip itself is never seen. Only the glow shows, and that is the whole effect.

picture frame wall molding

Simple rectangles of trim on a flat wall. It turns a plain wall into a backdrop and gives the light strip an edge to sit along.

Painted the same colour as the wall. The boxes show up only as shadow lines, which keeps them quiet.

red and forest green throw pillow covers

Solid red, a dark green with embroidered leaves, and a cream one with a stitched pine tree. Two plain, two patterned, all in the same two colours, so the mix never looks busy.

Covers, not whole pillows. The inserts stay all year and only the covers change in January.

red knit throw blanket with fringe

Deep red, chunky knit, long fringe. Draped over one arm, it carries the red from the pillows down to the rug.

Over the arm, not folded on the seat. It adds colour without taking a place to sit.

round wood coffee table

Warm light wood, round top, solid base. It holds a black vase of red flowers and a stack of books, and the wood warms up all the cream around it.

Round fits a curved sofa better than a rectangle. The two curves follow each other.

almost picked

the floor lamp that did not make it

A floor lamp beside the sofa was the obvious first choice. Every reading corner has one. It lost for one reason: a lamp makes one bright spot and a shadow on the other side, and the paneled wall would have been half dark. The strip spreads the same warm light along the whole wall. The trade is light too soft to read a book by.

the short version

Light behind the sofa, not above it. Holiday colour only in pillows, throw and flowers. Red at three heights. Everything else neutral, so January takes ten minutes.
