Everything in this room is soft and pale — cream sofa, faded rug, sheer curtains, beige walls. Then there is one black round table in the middle of it. That single dark piece is what holds the room together. Add two lit tapers and the corner changes after dark. Here is the room piece by piece — six that earned a place, and one that did not.

A light oak rectangular coffee table was the obvious first choice. It matched the warm floor and felt soft like everything else. It lost for one reason: in a room of cream, beige and faded pink, a light wood table disappeared, and the room had nothing to look at. The black drum gave the room a centre, and the round top left space to walk past the sectional corner. The trade is dust that shows on black.
